June’s photo of the month is the charming Farne Islands Puffin. The photo was taken on the 10th of June of the Farne Islands of the north east cost of England. The Farne islands are arguably one of the most exciting sea-bird colonies in England with approximately 37,000 pairs of puffins! But the Farne Islands aren’t just about the puffin, they are home to over 25 other species of birds as well as a large grey seal colony.
The puffin is unmistakable with its black and white undercarriage and distinctive black head with large pale cheeks. Not to mention their brightly coloured flattened bill.
Unfortunately the puffin is under threat and is listed with an “Amber Status” by the RSPB which means they are in moderate decline in the UK.
