Nature Sign Design was commissioned by Ian Johnson of The Newcastle Battalion Memorial Project in partnership with the North East War Memorial Project to make a memorial for the 16th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.
It was decided that a hand made oak memorial bench would be made and taken over to Authuille in France and be placed outside the church. It was also decided that two bronze plaques would be made and placed on the wall of the church as a lasting memorial to the men who gave their lives in the First World War.
Nature Sign Design worked very closely with Ian Johnson over many months and the results speak for themselves.
Anne Michaelides along with her son Matthew Michaelides and Keith Neilson represented Nature Sign Design and attended the unveiling ceremony in Authuille France on 27th June 2015. Anne and Keith took many photographs of the ceremony and the battlefields. These are available to view in the gallery below.
The relatives of the soldiers of the 16th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers attended the ceremony which included a pipe band. The occasion was very moving and momentous for all concerned.
